Noordhoek Ride

This artwork was a commission piece for a close friend. We had originally discussed her favourite memory of riding horses on Noordhoek beach, a scenic stretch of coastline in Cape Town, South Africa. As a youngster, she would ride this stretch of coast many times. Now living in the UK, she still has vivid memories of the place.

The concept was to create a piece of art that would capture the iconic beauty of Chapman's Peak and the Kakapo wreck, while also evoking the memory of riding horses along the wind-swept stretch of sand.

The memories of home were filled with nostalgia and the feeling of growing up on the Cape Peninsula. The challenge was to create a painting that captured these feelings with equal measure. Luckily, I had spent many days in the same space, not riding horses but surfing in the cold Atlantic waves.

It all begins with an idea. This is where imagination takes hold and you can let your mind wander over all the memories and times spent in a place like this. It's really exciting to take this visual concept to colour, developing the process with quick, rough drawings to try and capture a memory or feeling.
